Drunken Flower
Bars use the lovely version steeped in syrup pictured here, but Trader Joe's carries dried sweetened hibiscus flowers as an inexpensive alternative. The texture is similar to that of an exotic gummy candy. I’ve found that the dried flowers are splendid in green tea, adding a touch of fruit flavor and a hint of sweetness to balance out the bitterness of the tea. (Plus they look really cool and a little freakish, resembling some sort of small sea creature that one can pluck out of the mug and eat in front of one’s horrified coworkers.)

We have a beautiful large hibiscus plant that we lovingly haul into the house every October, and then back outside every April. The plant seems to thrive equally well in the corner of our dining room as it does on the sunny, south facing front porch. The peach colored flowers bloom year round, always more lovely than one would expect. So we were also curious when TJ's started selling the candied edible flowers. We use them as kind of mutant supersized craisins, adding them to salads topped with gorgonzola and pistachios. I also love the grean tea idea!
Thanks, Marta! You and Eddie really should have your own lifestyle blog with all of your cool ideas... chickens, edible flowers, homemade saunas...
I was at the Gage this weekend and they stopped serving the Passion cocktail with the flower in it!
Photos, please! I would LOVE to see a nice tasteful photo of you eating a flower, even better if we can get before and after shots -- flower at the bottom of your champagne glass, then in your mouth!! All in good fun, of course! :-)
